Combat Cancer!

This summer, your favourite Devon-based reggae and ska group, the Reggaskas, are teaming up with The Specialized Project to help raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust and the National Foundation for Youth Music.

The Reggaskas have recorded an exclusive track for The Specialized Project’s 2015 fundraising campaign. The track will be part of a four disc compilation, entitled Combat Cancer, that celebrates the work of Joe Strummer and The Clash and is set to be released in July this year.

Prior to Joe Strummer’s death in 2002, the punk legend was the founding member of a ‘super group’ called the Mescaleros. The Reggaskas will be showcasing their take on the Bob Marley classic “Redemption Song” which was covered by Strummer and The Mescaleros on their 2003 album “Streetcore” released after Strummer’s passing.

Adding a reggae/ska twist to the acoustic versions released by both Marley and Strummer, the Reggaskas turn up the tempo and include the welcome accompaniment of their brass section. This, in addition to Lizy’s soulful harmonies, makes for a fresh and unique outlook on this classic.

Now in their third successful year of fundraising, The Specialized Project seeks to bring together amateur and professional musicians to raise funds and improve the lives of young people and adults dealing with cancer.

Having evolved from an album and tour based around modern covers of tracks by ska legends “The Specials” (hence The Specialized Project), the organisation now aims to emulate and improve on the success of their previous three project albums.

Since 2012, The Specialized Project has released one album per year to raise funds to combat cancer. The 2012 Specials focused album was followed by 2013’s “Beat Teenage Cancer”, featuring the songs of The Beat, and, in turn, 2014’s “Specialized 3 – Mad not Cancer”, a hat-tip to the work of Madness.

2015 is set to be the biggest year yet with so many musicians volunteering, that the line-up was filled within 48 hours of the albums announcement. In fact, the response has been so exceptional that the Specialized Project has been able to confirm they will be supporting both The Teenage Cancer Trust and The National Foundation for Youth Music for the first time this year.

This November, fans of the Reggaskas will have the chance to see them strutting their stuff at “The Big One”, the fourth annual reggae and ska festival that supports the work of The Specialized Project and showcases the bands and musicians involved.
